Llanarthne, GB
I have a degree in Zoology from Durham University which provided a broad grounding in biological sciences. Following this I completed the Trainee Technician Scheme in Horticulture at Cambridge University Botanic Garden and went on from this to the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, where I achieved the Kew Diploma in Botanical Horticulture. During my time at Kew I undertook a travel scholarship to Malaysian Borneo focused on tropical parasite flora. On leaving Kew I was awarded the RHS Interchange Fellowship and spent a year working at Longwood Gardens, completing two periods of travel to the Californian deserts and the prairie remnants of the Midwest to explore ex-situ conservation of native flora. I took-up the post of Glasshouse Supervisor at Cambridge University Botanic Garden on my return to the UK and have been in this post since 2012. I oversee a small team of staff and volunteers to develop, maintain and curate all displays and collections under glass. During the past eight years I have worked hard to improve and grow the collection to fit the core research, education and conservation remit of the Gardens. I have led and participated in two collecting trips to Vietnam and South Africa. I have also built relationships with many other European botanic gardens and colleagues in the field. I have recently completed an MPhil at Cambridge University alongside my job, which has involved a molecular and morphological revision of the Neuradaceae. The above has provided me with the expertise to cultivate and curate diverse ex-situ collections. Through it I have hands-on experience with the propagation and cultivation of difficult and rarely grown taxa in a methodical and repeatable format.
