Over the last few months, BGCI has been collaborating with UNESCO and IUCN to assess the status of species in UNESCO World Heritage sites. The analysis reveals that UNESCO World Heritage sites harbour over 20% of mapped global species richness within just 1% of the Earth’s surface.
We have used the information produced by the Global Tree Assessment to assess the tree biodiversity in the natural World Heritage Sites. We found that 29% of all tree species are found in World Heritage Sites.
2,130 tree species threatened with extinction are found in UNESCO natural World Heritage Sites, representing 16% of global threatened tree species.
