From February 3 to 7 2025, the Baekdudaegan National Arboretum (BDNA), under the Korea Arboreta and Gardens Institute (KoAGI), hosted an intensive training program and an in-depth tour of its seed research facility for officials from the Oman Botanic Garden (OBG) Seed Bank team. This event aimed to strengthen collaboration between the two institutions and expand international networks for the seed conservation and research.

During the program, the OBG officials experienced the BDNA’s seed bank operation system and seed research technologies, learning advanced techniques for seed conservation and utilization, including:

1. Seed Processing, such as seed cleaning, fundamental data measurement, and seed storage
2. Training on seed viability and germination testing using the Tetrazolium Test
3. Application of advanced technologies, including X-ray analysis and multi-spectral imaging with a Seed Scanner

As a key institution for the long-term conservation and research of endemic and rare plant species, BDNA’s seed bank provided the OBG team with valuable insights into Korea’s advanced seed storage and research systems. The officials showed particular interest in observing Tetrazolium Test results under a microscope and was highly impressed by the Seed Scanner’s advanced imaging and analytical capabilities.

Further fostering knowledge exchange, Ms. Bushra Alhajri, Team Leader of the Oman Botanic Garden Seed Bank, delivered a presentation on OBG’s ongoing conservation initiatives, contributing to a deeper mutual understanding and cooperation between the two institutions.

This program marks a significant step in strengthening international seed conservation networks and fostering joint research efforts in response to climate change and biodiversity loss.
Mr. Chang-sul HAN, Director of BDNA, emphasized the importance of global collaboration, stating:
“This program has provided a crucial opportunity for Korea and Oman to work together in conserving and sustainably utilizing plant genetic resources. We will continue to expand international partnerships.”

Moving forward, BDNA will continue to strengthen cooperation with domestic and international institutions to advance plant diversity conservation, enhance seed research technologies, and contribute to addressing the challenges posed by the climate crisis.
