On Wednesday 9th April 2025 the next in BGCI’s webinar series took place focusing on The Global Biodiversity application process.

Ecosystem restoration projects hold a large potential to protect, enhance, and restore biodiversity. There is, however, a lack of standardized criteria to accurately measure and quantify biodiversity outcomes. As a result, many climate and biodiversity interventions, including tree planting, land management and agroforestry practices, fail to deliver positive outcomes and can inadvertently cause harm to ecosystems and local communities.

In response, Botanic Gardens Conservation International, the Society for Ecological Restoration, and a coalition of global biodiversity experts have developed and launched The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) to act as a robust framework to recognise and promote best practice in ecosystem restoration to deliver biodiversity outcomes.

TGBS certification is based on the measurement of eight criteria to verify that projects implement activities that improve and secure the long-term management of biodiversity at project sites. Submitting an application is the first step in the process towards obtaining this certification, and it’s an opportunity to share with TGBS’ Secretariat about the activities conducted at the target site and receive a first assessment.

This webinar guided participants through the application process and shared answers to some frequently asked questions.
