On 22 August 2023, BGCI and SER hosted the latest in the BGCI Webinar series: The Global Biodiversity Standard
The Global Biodiversity Standard is a new, site-based certification methodology designed to assess the impacts of tree planting, reforestation, and sustainable agricultural initiatives on biodiversity, and to mentor practitioners to achieve better biodiversity outcomes. The methodology includes remote-sensing and ground surveys carried out by ‘GBS hubs’ with offices in Brazil, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Peru, and Uganda located in already well-established biodiversity and ecological restoration organisations.
The development of the GBS is being developed by Botanic Gardens Conservation International, the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER), and other technical partners from CIFOR-ICRAF, Ecosia, IUCN Species Survival Commission, Plan Vivo, Reforest’Action, TRAFFIC, and 1t.org.
In this BGCI and SER webinar (hosted by SER), we introduce the Global Biodiversity Standard and the criteria for certification. An outline of the methodology is presented, covering (1) the use of SER’s 5-Star System to measure ecosystem integrity, including biodiversity, native, rare and threatened species, absence of invasive species, and genetic diversity, (2) a stakeholder engagement survey and (3) a review of monitoring and evaluation plans.
