The staff at the National Botanical Garden of Viña del Mar, Chile are very pleased to send us a small photographic report of the work carried out after the damage caused by the fire on 2 February, 2024. They would like to thank profusely to all the donors and help they received.

 

Greenhouse structures

Of the 3 greenhouses that existed before the fire, 2 were significantly damaged. Fortunately, thanks to your contributions and other benefactors, we were able to leave all 3 operational again and in better condition than they were.

Estructuras de los invernaderos: de los 3 invernaderos que existían antes del incendio se dañaron 2 en forma importante, felizmente gracias a los aportes de ustedes como de otros benefactores logramos dejar los 3 nuevamente operativos y en mejores condiciones que como estaban.

Nursery: Repair of the metal structure, sanding and painting, change of covers, closing of bird entrance, shade mesh posture, preparation of impregnated wood tables, irrigation was installed. 1. Maternidad : Reparación de la estructura de Metal , lijado y pintado , cambio de cubiertas , cierre de entrada de aves , postura de malla de sombra , elaboración de mesones de madera impregnada, se instaló el riego.

Greenhouse for cacti and exotic succulents: it was completely repaired and work tables were restored, irrigation was installed again. Invernadero de Cactáceas y suculentas exóticas: se reparó completamente y se restablecieron mesones de trabajo, se instaló el riego nuevamente
Cactus garden of native species, repaired structures and white sand substrate replaced after the winter rains that washed away the ash and charcoal sediment from the fire (Before and After). Cáctario de especies nativas, estructuras reparadas y sustrato de arena blanca repuesto después de las lluvias de invierno que arrastro el sedimento de cenizas y carbón del incendio (Antes y Después) .

Cleaning

Rental of a chipping machine to transform the plant material that was removed from the affected areas. Arriendo de Máquina chipeadora para transformar el material vegetal que se fue retirando de las zonas afectadas.

Repair

Repair of the irrigation network for the botanical collections. Reparación de la red de riego para las colecciones botánicas.

Improvements

Improvements in the Sakura garden. Mejoras en el jardin de los Sakura

New growing beds

Building of new counters for grown plants. Elaboración de nuevos mesones para plantas terminadas

Nursery shade

Shade for species in nursery. Sombreador para especies en viverización

Propagation

Propagation of species by seeds in a fully operational greenhouse. Propagación de especies por semillas en invernadero totalmente operativo

Work tables

Work tables in nursery for sowing. Mesones de trabajo en maternidad para siembras.

Capacity building
Training in collection, identification, cleaning and selection of native seeds to establish natural grasslands in autumn. Capacitación en colecta, identificación, limpieza y selección de semillas nativas para establecer praderas naturales en otoño.

Training of personnel in maintenance, use and precautions for the operation of brush cutters in the construction of fuel cut lines (firebreaks). Capacitación al personal en mantención, uso y precauciones de la operación de desmalezadoras en la confección de líneas corta combustible (cortafuegos ).
