The Global Botanic Garden Fund drives plant conservation – especially in gardens in areas of high biodiversity – by disbursing small grants every year. The fund is open to BGCI Member institutions and preference is given to botanic gardens in developing countries and biodiversity hotspots.

2024 Grant Recipients

In April 2024, BGCI opened 5 different grants each with varying criteria:
• BGCI Member Grants
• Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Grants (MLA)
• ArbNet Partnership Programme Grants (ArbNet)
• Global Conservation Consortia Grants (GCC)
• Leon Levy Native Plant Preserve Grants (LLNPP)

We received a total of 109 applications for the Global Botanic Garden Fund. The projects are varied from seed collecting, to improving collection management in gardens, to education.

Congratulations to the successful recipients; BGCI and partner organisations will be distributing 46 grants, worth $128,964, to 42 institutions, across 26 different countries.

Funding for the Global Botanic Garden Fund was made possible in 2024 by contributions from:
• ArbNet (The Morton Arboretum)
• Minnesota Landscape Arboretum
• Leon Levy Foundation
• The Huntington
• The Friends of Bedgebury National Pinetum (Forestry England)
• and crowd-sourced funding through the 2023 Holiday Challenge, the BigGive and GBGF Donations.

The map below shows the total number of grants disbursed in 2024 (including grants awarded earlier in the year for GGI-Awards and Forest Service Rare Plant Partnerships). Hover over the different points to discover the organisations and the projects awarded.

BGCI was extremely impressed by the applications submitted to the Global Botanic Garden Fund. It is a testament to the quality of applications and the clear need for continued, additional support to the botanic garden community.

BGCI will continue to look for additional funding for the Global Botanic Garden Fund, to support global goals in plant conservation.
