BGCI is saddened to hear of the passing of Robin Herbert CBE, one of the founder trustees of BGCI, and a long term Board member. We send our condolences to Robin’s family members together with our gratitude for his outstanding service to the botanic garden community.
“On January 12, 2024, the world of horticulture lost one of its most influential figures with the passing of Robin Arthur Elidyr Herbert, CBE. As the president of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), Herbert left an indelible mark on the history of gardening, shaping the culture and enthusiasm that define the field today. His legacy extends far beyond boardrooms and committee meetings, reaching deep into the very soil of the gardening community.
Robin Herbert’s journey in horticulture was not just a career; it was a passionate and dedicated commitment to fostering a love for plants and gardens. Born with a green thumb, his fascination with horticulture began at an early age and evolved into a lifelong devotion. Over the years, he became a pivotal figure in the realm of gardening, contributing significantly to the development and advancement of horticultural practices. In 2012, Herbert assumed the prestigious role of President of the Royal Horticultural Society, a position he held until his recent passing. During his tenure, he steered the RHS with a vision that extended beyond the traditional boundaries of the society. His leadership was characterized by a commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and the promotion of horticulture as a vital element in the fabric of society.
One of Herbert’s notable achievements was his emphasis on education and outreach. Recognizing the importance of instilling a love for gardening in future generations, he spearheaded initiatives that brought horticulture into schools and communities. Through educational programs, workshops, and partnerships, he aimed to make gardening accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds, ensuring that the passion for plants would be carried forward by generations to come. Beyond his administrative role, Robin Herbert was a hands-on gardener, often found with his hands in the soil, sowing seeds of inspiration and knowledge. He believed in the therapeutic and transformative power of gardens, advocating for their role in promoting mental well-being and environmental stewardship. Under his guidance, the RHS became a leading voice in championing sustainable and eco-friendly gardening practices.
Herbert’s influence was not confined to the borders of the United Kingdom; his international collaborations expanded the reach of the RHS and fostered global partnerships in horticulture. His efforts in promoting botanical conservation and biodiversity resonated on a global scale, reinforcing the interconnectedness of the world’s plant enthusiasts. As news of Robin Herbert’s passing reverberates through the gardening community, tributes pour in from horticulturists, gardeners, and enthusiasts worldwide. Colleagues remember him not just as a leader but as a mentor, a friend, and a source of inspiration. His passion for horticulture and his tireless efforts to share that passion have left an enduring legacy.
In closing this chapter in the history of horticulture and the Royal Horticultural Society, we bid farewell to Robin Arthur Elidyr Herbert. His contributions to the world of gardening will continue to blossom, taking root in the hearts of those who share his love for plants and the transformative power of gardens. The gardening community mourns the loss of a visionary leader but celebrates the enduring impact of his legacy, which will undoubtedly continue to flourish in the fertile soil of horticultural enthusiasm.”
