The IPSN has recently created three new pest alerts for organisms that have been highlighted as causing significant problems within botanic collections in recent months, in Europe, North America & the Caribbean. We encourage botanic gardens to be aware and stay vigilant. These pests each now have specific alert posters:

The IPSN are advising all gardens to keep a look out for these pests and encourage printing & displaying these resources within their facilities to raise awareness for both staff and visitors.

The three new pests are:

Plane lace bug – causes damage to Plane trees. It has been found in London, and it is already causing damage in Europe. Members in the UK are also encouraged to please report any suspected findings via TreeAlert and you can download the ‘Plane lace bug’ poster HERE.

Phantasma scale – has a particular preference for palm species. This scale insect has
now spread to North America and the Caribbean. Due to its small size, it can be difficult
to detect. Download the ‘Phantasma scale’ poster HERE.

New Guinea flatworm – is a highly invasive alien species. It was found in botanic garden
in the British Virgin Islands. It is a concern in Europe, especially in gardens with tropical
collections, as it can be spread through trade. Download the ‘New Guinea flatworm’
poster HERE.
