The Exceptional Plant Conservation Network (EPCN) has published two new papers entitled ‘Defining exceptional species—A conceptual framework to expand and advance ex situ conservation of plant diversity beyond conventional seed banking’ and ‘Gap analysis of exceptional species—Using a global list of exceptional plants to expand strategic ex situ conservation action beyond conventional seed banking’.

These companion articles present the definition of exceptional species and describe a global, working Exceptional Status List of over 23,000 species. Through this work the EPCN aims to provide resources to develop strategic conservation action for these species.
