On the anniversary of the launch of GlobalTreeSearch, we bring you an updated list of the world’s tree species. Work has continued over the past year, updating and amending the database when new information becomes available.

When launched in April 2017, GlobalTreeSearch documented 60,065 tree species. Today the new number of tree species is 60,096.

Since its launch, we have made the following changes:

Number of tree species added to GlobalTreeSearch: 539

Number of added country distributions: 8,317

Despite adding 539 new species names to GlobalTreeSearch, the total number of tree species has only increased by 31 species. This reflects revisions in taxonomy and some erroneous species previously listed.

Many thanks to BGCI staff and interns, as well as tree experts from across the globe for contributing new information to expand the GlobalTreeSearch database.
