Interpretation panels for the Havana Botanic Garden: enhancing visitors’ experience and increasing the Garden’s educational capacity
Introduction
The Havana Botanic Garden, established in 1819, was transferred to the Ministry of Culture in 1968 when it was rebranded as ‘Quinta de Los Molinos’ and ceased its functions as a botanic institution. In 2022, Planta! got involved and collaborated with the organization. The Garden became a Limited Liability Society with a more responsive management system, resurrected the name “Havana Botanic Garden” and resumed its botanical roles. With Planta!’s collaboration, the Garden is documenting the collections, designing a conservation program and focusing on getting BGCI accreditation.
Project Goals
To produce inclusive interpretation panels for the garden, which will enhance the visitors’ experience, increase the educational capacities of the Garden and bring the organization closer to accreditation.

Key Achievements
The Havana Botanic Garden “Quinta de los Molinos” successfully installed 50 interpretation panels and 600 plant labels. The panels are playing a vital role in enhancing public engagement and improving the identification and management of plant collections. Additionally, they are helping visitors navigate the garden more easily, locating specific plants or exhibits while gaining insight into plant diversity, conservation and sustainability. The panels also serve as a bridge between the botanical and historical narratives of the garden, complementing existing displays that focus on its rich cultural heritage.
