The Understory

An understanding of the natural world, and what’s in it as a source of not only great curiosity but great fulfilment.” – David Attenborough

The Understory is a project from BGCI’s Communication Team, created by Rebecca Hansell, to bring the incredible work that BGCI undertakes across the world to a wider audience.

The Understory is your chance to take a look behind the curtain at the people working in plant conservation, members of the BGCI team, fun facts about plants, and resources to help you to dive deeper into the topics that fascinate you!

We hope you enjoy your walk through the understory.

So, getting adults engaged with science and letting them understand that scientists were not people in lab coats judging them, I felt was really important.” – Alie Ward, Ologies Podcast

We are delighted to be able to introduce you to The Understory Podcast from BGCI.

Hosted by Rebecca Hansell, the Communications Lead for BGCI, each series will take a look at a different area of BGCI’s work. The first series, released October 2024, looks at our work and presence at the biodiversity COP16 in Colombia.

The first series is co-hosted by BGCI’s Conservation Policy Manager, Megan Barstow, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the table as we explore the world of international policies related to plant conservation.

We hope you enjoy listening!

In a forest of a hundred thousand trees, no two leaves are alike. And no two journeys along the same path are alike.” – Paolo Coelho

Although our work is focused around plant conservation, so much of our work has human stories that accompany and help facilitate our conservation work.

Many of these stories have not been shared, so we want to create a space to highlight the communities we work with, the partners that help us make real impact, and the wonderful BGCI staff who work tirelessly to make a world where plant diversity is valued, secure, and supports all life.
