CBD Manual for Botanic Gardens
This manual is the second in a series of botanic garden guides (see also CITES manual) produced by BGCI, aimed at stimulating plant conservation action by explaining the international context for such work.
With its huge scope and the complicated language associated with its status as an international legal agreement, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) may seem remote to many small botanic gardens. However, many aspects of the Convention, not only the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC), are relevant to the work of botanic gardens.
BGCI aims to ‘de-mystify’ the CBD and explain its importance to all organisations that are concerned with the conservation and use of natural resources.
The manual provides suggestions as to how botanic gardens can better focus their work in the framework of the CBD and how they can ensure that their valuable work is recognised as contributing to the overall aim of the CBD: to reduce the rate of biodiversity loss by 2010.
